Few images show the Library of Congress's cataloging operations as directly as this view of the card revision room in the Processing Department. Staff in rooms like this checked, corrected and updated the catalog cards describing new acquisitions before they were filed. The Library began selling printed catalog cards to other libraries in 1901, which made this kind of careful revision work central to its national role. The photograph, dated somewhere between 1890 and 1930, captures a time when the card catalog was the main way readers found books.
