The record places this view inside the Library of Congress's Card Division, where workers set type for the catalog cards the library printed and distributed to other libraries. Printing cards was a central job for the library in its early twentieth-century years, when its cataloging output was sent across the country to libraries that used the cards to build their own catalogs. The caption card gives no date, so the photograph is best understood as a glimpse of that compositor's work, with hand-set type and printing equipment at the center of the scene.
