Few parts of the Thomas Jefferson Building are as specific as this bronze plaque in the Coolidge Auditorium, which honors Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge (1864-1953). A chamber music patron, she financed the auditorium, which opened within the library in 1925 as a concert hall for chamber music. The plaque reflects the decorative bas-relief style of the Jefferson Building's interior, where sculpture and ornament were built into the architecture. This photograph, made sometime between 1925 and 1940, records the commemorative detail as the building was still new.
