Few rooms in the Thomas Jefferson Building show the Library's scholarly work as plainly as the Hispanic Division's reading room, photographed around 1940. The division grew from the Library's expanding collections of Spanish and Portuguese-language material, and by the late 1930s it had become a focal point for research on Latin America. The Jefferson Building, opened in 1897, was designed in the Beaux-Arts style, with marble, ornate detail, and grand reading spaces meant to impress visiting scholars. The photograph offers a useful record of how researchers worked in a building that was then only about four decades old.
