Among the prints in this gallery, this three-sheet triptych stands out for its subject: a balloon ascension in the United States, watched by crowds and carriages. The record titles it *Amerikakoku*, or "America," and gives its date as 1865, with the signature "Yoshitora ga." It belongs to a series on the Western world, made when Japan was only beginning to open its ports to foreign trade and before the Meiji era began in 1868. Artists of this period often drew foreign scenes from Western illustrations, so the print shows how Japanese designers pictured unfamiliar American life. Notice the crowd's dress and the carriages, which give a sense of the spectacle.
