Few prints from this period bring a balloon, soldiers and foreign officials together as this triptych does, under the title *Amerikakoku*, or "America." Issued in 1867, in the final years of the Tokugawa shogunate, it reflects the novelty of Western visitors in Tokyo, where American consular staff were a new and closely watched presence. Several names are credited, including Toyohara Kunichika, a prolific designer who worked into the Meiji era, and the engraving is attributed to Hori Mino. Notice how the women and onlookers turn the foreign spectacle into something to gather around and stare at.
