Titled simply *Amerikakoku*, or "America," this woodcut shows a foreign man on horseback in Japan, as its subject headings indicate. It bears the signature of Gountei Sadahide, an artist of the Utagawa school who turned to depicting the newcomers of Yokohama after that treaty port opened to foreign trade in 1859, and the carving is credited to Koizumi Minokichi. The record notes that the sheet may be part of a larger multi-part print, so its full composition may once have extended beyond this frame. Images like this reflect the curiosity and wariness with which Japanese viewers regarded Western visitors in the early 1860s.
