From the top of the Capitol's new cast-iron dome, completed in 1866, this view sweeps eastward over a capital still taking shape. The dome, designed by Thomas U. Walter, replaced the earlier wood-framed dome and was finished while the nation was recovering from the Civil War. Looking east from that height, the viewer takes in the Capitol grounds and the streets beyond, showing a city still sparse in places and growing around its government buildings. The title's use of "Washington City" reflects the name the municipality carried before its 1871 merger into the District of Columbia government.
