Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1910 was a river city on the James, built up over steep hills and known locally as the "Hill City." Its economy rested on tobacco processing and shoe manufacturing, along with rail traffic that moved goods and workers through town. The panorama takes in Randolph-Macon Woman's College, a women's college founded in Lynchburg in 1891 and then one of the best-known institutions for women in the South. In the years before the First World War, residents would have recognized the city by its factory smokestacks, its church spires, and the college grounds that gave the town an academic reputation beyond its industrial base.
