Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1920 was a hilly river city on the James, where the Norfolk and Western Railway operated large shops and freight yards. Tobacco warehouses and processing plants, shoe and textile works, and foundries provided much of the local payroll, and the rail lines carried those goods to markets across the South and East. The Y.M.C.A. site shown here tied the city's young working men to the riverfront, offering a place for recreation and fellowship. Lynchburg also hosted several colleges, including Randolph-Macon Woman's College, so its civic life mixed industrial labor with church and school activity. Residents would have known it as a busy tobacco and railroad town still adjusting after the First World War.
