Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1910 was a river city of tobacco warehouses, shoe factories, and rail yards, sitting on the James River and built across a series of hills that gave it the nickname "City of Seven Hills." Its tobacco trade and manufacturing drew workers and business from the surrounding Piedmont counties, and the Norfolk and Western and Southern railways carried goods out of the city in every direction. The initials "R.M.W.C." point to Randolph-Macon Woman's College, a women's school on the heights above town that drew students from across the South and gave Lynchburg a strong reputation for higher education. Residents of the period would have known the city as a place of commerce and schooling, with its civic life shaped by the factories below and the college on the hill.
