Lynchburg in 1915 was a Piedmont river city still tied to the rail yards and factory whistles along the James, and it was also feeling the effects of the war in Europe, which had begun the year before. The conflict disrupted the overseas markets that bought Virginia leaf, so local growers and dealers followed prices and shipping news closely. Residents also read with alarm about the sinking of the Lusitania in May, and the national debate over military preparedness reached the town's churches, clubs, and newspapers. This wide view, taken from a height above the downtown, shows the brick blocks, church steeples, and smokestacks that made up everyday life there.
