Newport News, Virginia, in 1915 was a city built around its shipyards on the north shore of Hampton Roads. The Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company was among the state's largest employers, and its yards drew workers and their families from the surrounding counties and from farther south. Europe was at war that year, and American shipyards were busy with orders from abroad and with the question of whether the United States would be drawn in, a concern that filled conversation in towns like this one. Residents knew the place by its long waterfront, its riveting and launch days, and the steady traffic of ships moving in and out of the roads.
