Abingdon, the county seat of Washington County in the Southwest Virginia highlands, was already more than a century old in 1915, having been settled in the 1770s along the Great Valley Road. Its economy rested on farming, livestock, and trade in the surrounding valley, with the town serving as a market and courthouse center for farm families. Two schools shaped its civic and social life: Martha Washington College, a women's college, and Stonewall Jackson Institute, which drew students from across the region. Rail service, which had reached the town in the 1850s, linked it to larger markets, though the bigger industrial growth of the early twentieth century was centered further west in towns like Bristol. This aerial view shows a small town still defined by its courthouse, its college campus, and the church spires and residential streets that surrounded them.
