Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1908 was a river city of hills and brick, sitting on the James River where the stone terraces of its downtown climbed toward the residential heights. Tobacco was central to its economy, with warehouses and factories handling leaf grown across the Piedmont, and the railroads that crossed the city carried that product and its shipments to northern and southern markets. Lynchburg's population had grown steadily since the close of the Civil War, and its residents thought of their town as a manufacturing and trade center for the region, with shoe and foundry work adding to the tobacco trade. Views like this one, taken from a height above the streets, show the mix of commercial blocks, church spires, and mill and warehouse roofs that made up the city's daily life at the start of the twentieth century.
