Roanoke, Virginia, in 1907 was a railroad town that had grown up quickly around the Norfolk and Western Railway, whose large repair shops and yards gave the city much of its payroll. Boosters had nicknamed it the "Magic City" for its rapid rise from the small settlement of Big Lick, which had been renamed and incorporated as Roanoke in 1884. Factories, wholesale houses, and the rail terminals drew workers and merchants from the surrounding Blue Ridge and Valley farmland, and the streets of the downtown bustled with trolleys, freight wagons, and new brick office blocks. The Hotel Roanoke, built by the railroad on the hill above the tracks, stood as a symbol of the company's influence over the city. Residents of the day knew Roanoke above all as a place where the railroad set the pace of daily life.
