Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1909 was a river and rail town built on a line of hills above the James River, and its economy rested on tobacco, iron, and transportation. Warehouses and factories along the riverfront handled leaf tobacco shipped down from the Piedmont, while the Norfolk and Western and Southern railways carried goods and workers in and out of the city. The Glamorgan Pipe and Foundry Company, whose works appear in this view, made cast-iron pipe for water and gas systems, a product that growing American towns needed as they laid mains and expanded their utilities. Residents knew Lynchburg as a busy industrial center, and the foundry's smokestacks and sheds would have been a familiar part of the skyline to mill hands and townspeople alike.
