Natural Bridge, in Rockbridge County, Virginia, was by 1909 as much a resort as a natural wonder, though the limestone arch over Cedar Creek had drawn visitors for more than a century. Thomas Jefferson once owned the property, and the tradition that George Washington carved his initials on the rock was repeated to guests arriving by rail. The hotel and its cottages relied on summer travelers from Virginia's cities, who came to walk the gorge and climb to the overlooks. Nearby Lexington, home to Washington and Lee University and the Virginia Military Institute, shaped much of the region's professional and cadet life, while valley farms kept the surrounding economy steady. To most visitors in 1909, the place was known first as a natural marvel and second as a stop on the valley route.
