Richmond, Virginia, in 1909 was a city of railroads, factories, and tobacco, and it still carried the weight of having been the Confederate capital half a century earlier. Its rail yards and river-front works drew workers from the surrounding countryside, and its cigarette and plug tobacco plants, along with iron, flour, and other manufacturing, gave the city much of its payroll. Shoe and leather works such as the Battle Axe Shoe Company were part of this mix of light industry, supplying goods that moved out by rail to markets across the South. Many residents of the period would have known Richmond as a city of neat rows of brick houses on the hills above the James River, with streetcar lines carrying workers between home and the factory gates.
