Richmond, Virginia, in 1909 was a former Confederate capital that had become a center of tobacco manufacturing, iron and metalwork, and flour milling, with factories and rail lines tied to the James River and the city's growing population. Electric streetcars carried workers and students across the city, and the old Tredegar ironworks along the river still symbolized the industrial base that had survived the Civil War. Church-affiliated colleges such as Union University occupied an important place in this city of about 100,000 people, where religious and educational institutions shaped civic life.
