In 1909, the University of Virginia occupied a rise just west of Charlottesville, the town that had grown up beside Thomas Jefferson's campus, which opened in 1825. Jefferson's design of pavilions, student rooms, and the domed Rotunda still anchored the grounds when this view was made. The town's economy depended heavily on the university, on farming in the surrounding county, and on rail service, since the Chesapeake and Ohio and the Southern Railway both ran through the city. The student body was entirely male, and many young men came from established Virginia families who lived under the university's honor system, which dated to 1842. Residents of the area would have known the campus as the center of local life, a place that shaped both the town's identity and its social customs.
