Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1909 was a small city of several thousand people, built around the University of Virginia, which Thomas Jefferson founded and which opened in 1825. Its grounds, laid out as the "Academical Village" with the Rotunda at the head of the Lawn, were the center of town life, and the students, faculty, and staff made up a large share of local business and conversation. Virginia's state politics and the southern professional class shaped what the university taught and who attended, and the school's honor system, long a point of local pride, was already well established by then. The town's economy also leaned on surrounding Albemarle County farms, orchards, and the railroad that carried goods and visitors in and out. The Rotunda had been gutted by fire in 1895 and rebuilt, a reminder to residents that the campus had been rebuilt once before.
