Charlottesville, Virginia, in 1909 was a small county seat in the Piedmont, where the University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson and opened in 1825, shaped much of local life. The university drew students from across the South and was the town's largest institution, supporting shops, boarding houses, and service trades. Railroad lines running through town connected the community to farm markets and to larger cities such as Richmond, moving grain, produce, and passengers. This photograph of the university grounds shows a campus that residents of the time knew as Jefferson's design, even as Virginia's segregation laws and Jim Crow customs governed daily life in the town around it.
