In 1917 Charlottesville was a town of several thousand people, shaped by the University of Virginia on the hill above it and served by the Chesapeake and Ohio and Southern railways. The university's hospital had opened in 1901, and these young women were part of a training program in a profession that was about to become urgent. The United States entered the First World War in April 1917, and hospitals and the Red Cross soon sought trained nurses for service at home and overseas. Outside the hospital, the local economy depended on the university, rail freight, and surrounding farms, while daily life in the town centered on churches, campus events, and the discipline of a nurses' training school.
