Quantico, Virginia, sat along the Potomac River in Prince William County in 1917, a rural stretch about 35 miles south of Washington, D.C. That spring the United States entered the First World War, and the Marine Corps, which had been a small force before the war, began a rapid expansion that sent large numbers of recruits through training camps. The Marines acquired the Quantico site that year to serve as a training ground, and its rifle ranges, drill fields, and temporary barracks were built up quickly. For people in the surrounding county and in nearby Washington, the new camp brought soldiers, construction crews, and wartime demand to a quiet farming area. This panoramic view records a Marine encampment at that formative moment, when the base was taking shape as a permanent home for the Corps.
