Quantico, Virginia, in 1918 was a young Marine Corps post on the Potomac, set up only a year earlier as the Corps expanded for the First World War. Recruits and officers trained there in rifle marksmanship, drill, and field work before shipping out for France, and the base's rail links to Washington and points south made it easy to move men in and out. The camp was crowded and hastily built, and when influenza swept through military posts that autumn, Quantico was among the places hit hard, with the sick housed in makeshift wards. Local people in Prince William County knew the post as a sudden new neighbor, bringing payrolls and traffic to a farming area that had changed little for decades. The armistice in November brought a quieter but still busy period of demobilization.
