St. Helena Training Station in Norfolk, Virginia, was a United States Navy recruit camp in 1918, when the country was fighting in the First World War. Norfolk's waterfront, shipyards, and rail connections made it one of the Navy's main Atlantic bases, and the station helped turn a steady stream of young men into sailors for the fleet. Many of its trainees were African American recruits who were assigned to messman and other service duties, which set the daily rhythm of drill, classes, and barracks life. The same autumn, the influenza pandemic swept through crowded military camps and city streets alike, forcing communities across Hampton Roads to confront sickness on a large scale. Residents of Norfolk would have known the station as one of the many wartime institutions that had reshaped their city's economy and population.
