Quantico, Virginia, was a young Marine Corps post in 1918, set on the Potomac in Prince William County and reached by rail. The United States' entry into the First World War had pushed the Corps to expand rapidly, and the post filled with recruits, drill fields, and temporary wooden barracks built to house and train them. Men trained there for overseas service in France, and the camp's pace quickened as the year went on. That autumn, influenza swept through military camps across the country, and crowded posts like Quantico faced sickness and quarantines alongside their training schedules. The armistice in November 11, 1918, ended the fighting but not the work of the camp, which kept serving as a center for Marine training in the years that followed.
