Lynchburg in 1913 still lived close to its Civil War past, since Confederate forces under Jubal Early had held the town against a Union advance in June 1864, and older residents remembered that summer well. The James River, once busy with canal boats at the town's landings, now shared its banks with rail lines and factory yards. In Washington, Woodrow Wilson had taken office in March, and local papers followed the new administration closely. This view, taken from a rise above the streets, shows church spires, brick storefronts, and chimneys, the everyday skyline of a town that looked both backward and forward.
