Lynchburg in 1909 was a city of seven hills, and the electric streetcar lines that climbed them were a fresh sign of how far the town had grown beyond its old river-landing origins. Randolph-Macon Woman's College, founded in the city in 1891, drew young women from across the South, and its campus was one of the institutions residents pointed to when they described Lynchburg as a place of learning as well as commerce. To the southwest, the Blue Ridge rose above the Piedmont, and on clear days the mountains framed the city's roofs and church steeples. This view, made from a height above the downtown, shows a community still expanding up its slopes in the years before the automobile began to reshape Virginia streets.
