Natural Bridge, in Rockbridge County, Virginia, was a famous stop for visitors in 1909. The limestone arch, roughly 215 feet high, spans Cedar Creek, and by then it drew tourists who came by rail through the Shenandoah Valley and stayed at nearby hotels. Thomas Jefferson had owned the site and wrote about it in his *Notes on the State of Virginia*, so many visitors knew it as a national curiosity with a founding-era connection. The surrounding county was farming country, with its economy tied to grain, livestock, and the small towns along the rail lines, while Lexington, a few miles away, was home to the Virginia Military Institute and Washington and Lee University. Early in the twentieth century, the bridge was both a scenic attraction and a point of local pride.
