Richmond College, a Baptist-affiliated men's college founded in 1832, occupied its city campus in Richmond, Virginia, in 1909, when the college was still rooted in the downtown streets it had grown up beside. Richmond was then a major manufacturing city, with tobacco processing, iron and metalworking at the Tredegar works, and flour milling drawing workers and capital along the James River and the rail lines that met there. The city's electric streetcars carried clerks, mill hands, and students across neighborhoods that were sharply divided by race and class under the segregation laws of the day. Within a few years the college would leave this older setting for a new campus farther west, a move that marked the institution's changing place in the growing city.
