The University of Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson and opened in 1825, sat on a hill just outside Charlottesville in 1911, and this view shows its campus as the college knew it. Jefferson's Academical Village, with its colonnaded pavilions and gardens along the Lawn, still set the layout, and the Rotunda, which had burned in 1895, had been rebuilt and reopened only a few years before. In 1911 the university enrolled only men, and its students came largely from Virginia and the surrounding South. Charlottesville itself depended on the university, local farming, and the railroads that linked the town to Richmond and the wider region.
