Richmond, Virginia, in 1914 was a city built on tobacco, iron, and railroads. Its factories turned out cigarettes and plug tobacco, and the Tredegar Iron Works on the James River and several rail lines moved goods through the former Confederate capital. The Anti-Saloon League, the subject this photograph is titled for, was pushing hard against liquor that year, when Virginia's legislature was moving toward statewide prohibition, set to take effect in 1916. Saloonkeepers, brewers, and their customers in the city watched that fight closely, since the outcome would affect downtown business and local tax revenue. The panorama shows a city in the middle of that argument just as the war in Europe began drawing national attention elsewhere.
