Eggleston Springs, in the southwestern Virginia mountains, was known in 1914 chiefly for its mineral springs, which had drawn visitors seeking health cures for generations. The surrounding country depended on farming, timber cutting, and small mills, and nearby railroads carried lumber and coal out of the highlands, making the region more accessible than it had been a few decades earlier. Summer guests and resident families lived by a slower rhythm of church gatherings, boarding houses, and seasonal visits. That year Europe's war broke out, but for people in this valley the news came mostly through newspapers and the mail.
