Mountain Lake, in Giles County, Virginia, sat at roughly 4,000 feet in 1914, and visitors reached it by train and then by a steep mountain road that made the trip part of the summer's ritual. Many families brought household servants, trunks, and horses, so the grounds held a small working community of grooms, cooks, and laundresses who kept the guests comfortable. The mountain setting also drew people who wanted cooler air during the humid months, and the season's guest lists reflected the same families returning year after year. Across the surrounding ridges, road improvements were still slow, and the mountain roads remained rough for most travelers.
