Roanoke, Virginia, in 1915 was a railroad city that had grown quickly from a small crossroads settlement called Big Lick, which took the name Roanoke when it was incorporated as a city in 1884. The Norfolk and Western Railway's large shops and rail yards gave the town much of its payroll, drawing machinists, brakemen, and their families from the surrounding countryside and from across the Blue Ridge. Wholesale trade, banking, and a growing number of brick office buildings and churches reflected a local economy that residents proudly called the "Magic City." Life still moved at the pace of the trains, with the whistles and switching engines marking the shifts of a town that expected to keep expanding.
