Hampton Roads, where the James and Nansemond rivers meet Chesapeake Bay, was in 1920 a region built on ships, soldiers and trade. Newport News had its large shipyard, Norfolk and Portsmouth were tied to the Navy's yards and the port trade, and Hampton stood beside Fort Monroe, one of the oldest army posts on the Atlantic coast. This summer camp, pictured in a wide view, reflects a shoreline where families and young people sought outdoor air in season. The year also brought Prohibition, which took effect nationwide in January and changed social life in port cities where saloons and dockside business had been common. Residents knew the Roads first as a working harbor.
