Camp Lee, Virginia, sat near Petersburg in 1911, a city whose economy rested on tobacco processing, river-fed mills, and rail lines running south toward the Carolinas. The Camp Lee name is better known for the Army cantonment the War Department established on that ground in 1917, when the United States entered the First World War and needed training space for draftees. The photograph is dated 1911, so it predates that post, and the "U.S.N.A." label in its title is not explained by the record. Petersburg's residents in 1911 knew their town for its tobacco factories, its Civil War siege history, and its role as a regional trading point. Its later military use turned the surrounding countryside into a training ground within a few years.
