Marines Camp at Deer Point, on Guantanamo Bay in eastern Cuba, shows a U.S. military post in 1911, about a decade after the Spanish-American War. The United States had held a naval lease on the bay since 1903, under terms that followed the Platt Amendment and Cuba's independence from Spain. In the surrounding countryside, sugar cane fields and rail lines carried cane and other produce to the coast, while iron mining near Daiquirí and other nearby ports had drawn American capital to the region. Cuba's government under President José Miguel Gómez was still establishing itself, and the Marines and Navy at the bay were a visible reminder of American influence on the island's southeastern coast.
