Havana Harbor in 1911 was one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean, and the S.S. Chalmette was photographed there during the years when Cuba was re-establishing its own government after the United States occupation ended in 1909. Sugar was the island's dominant export, and much of it moved through this harbor toward American refineries and markets, with American capital heavily invested in the sugar mills and railways that fed the port. The old fortresses of Morro Castle and La Cabaña still guarded the narrow harbor entrance, a reminder of Spanish colonial rule that had ended only about a dozen years earlier. For the Havana residents who worked the wharves, the steamships at anchor meant wages, trade, and steady news of the wider world.
