Havana's harbor in 1929 sat at the center of Cuba's economy, where sugar, tobacco and cigars moved out through the port to buyers in the United States and Europe. The island was then just over two decades past independence from Spain and under heavy American political and economic influence, a relationship that shaped its trade, its banks and its politics. The city had grown rapidly during the sugar boom of the early century, and its waterfront was crowded with cargo ships, ferries and warehouses along the bay entrance guarded by old Spanish forts. Havanans of that era knew the harbor as the gateway for tourists arriving from Florida and as a busy commercial port, while the political turmoil of the late 1920s under the Machado government was already unsettling daily life.
