Havana Harbor in 1913 was one of the busiest ports in the Caribbean, shaped by the sugar trade that had made Cuba's economy dependent on exports to the United States and Europe. Cuba had gained formal independence from Spain in 1902 after the Spanish-American War, and the island was then governed under a republic still closely tied to American financial and commercial interests. Steamships of several European and American lines called at the port, carrying sugar, tobacco and fruit outward and bringing manufactured goods and passengers in. The photograph's subject, the German liner Victoria Luise, belonged to the Hamburg-America Line, a reminder of how far the port's shipping networks reached before the First World War disrupted them.
