Guantanamo Bay in 1911 was a United States Navy coaling station on Cuba's southeastern coast, held under a lease dating from 1903. The Marines photographed at Deer Point belonged to a garrison that had been posted on the bay since American forces landed there during the Spanish-American War in 1898. Cuba was governed by its own president, José Miguel Gómez, who had taken office in 1909 when the American occupation ended, and the surrounding province depended heavily on sugar cane and the mills that processed it. Sailors and Marines at the base lived beside Cuban towns such as Caimanera, and the bay's coal and supply depot was one of the Navy's most useful Caribbean anchorages.
