In 1911 the Wisconsin Dells, a stretch of the Wisconsin River cut through soft sandstone bluffs in south-central Wisconsin, had become a major summer destination. Rail lines brought excursionists from Chicago, Milwaukee, and other cities, and tour boats carried them through the narrow gorges, where the rock walls rise sharply above the water. Earlier, the river had carried logs and rafts downstream from northern pineries, but by the early twentieth century tourism had largely replaced lumber as the local livelihood. Hotels, boat landings, and souvenir shops crowded the riverbanks, and the community that would later take the name Wisconsin Dells was then known as Kilbourn City. Visitors at Dixon Point would have known the spot as one of the scenic bends they came to see from the water.
