In 1911 the Dells of the Wisconsin River, in Sauk and Columbia counties, drew more visitors each summer than the logging camps that had once dominated the river. Pine cutting upstream had largely ended by then, and the sandstone gorges, with their narrow channels and carved rock walls, had become the region's main attraction. Excursion steamers carried tourists through the narrows from the river town of Kilbourn, and railroad lines out of Chicago and Milwaukee brought many of those passengers north for a day or a week. Local residents knew the Dells as a resort district where hotels, boat landings, and souvenir stands depended on the summer trade, and the same scenery that once drew lumbermen now drew sightseers.
