In 1911, the Dells of the Wisconsin River, in south-central Wisconsin, were already known across the Midwest as a summer destination. Sandstone walls rose sharply above the narrow river channel, and by then excursion steamers carried visitors through the gorge past named rock formations. The region's older economy had rested on river traffic and lumber, with logs floated down the Wisconsin toward mills farther south, and the scenic river was turning into a resort economy. Hotels, boat landings, and tour operators in the nearby towns depended on visitors who came by rail. Local residents would have known the place as a holiday attraction as much as a working river.
