In 1911 the Dells of the Wisconsin River sat near the town then called Kilbourn City, a name it kept until 1931, when it became Wisconsin Dells. Railroad lines carried most outside visitors from Chicago and Milwaukee, and the town's shops, guides, and boatmen made their living from the summer crowds those trains brought. Residents had watched the place change from a town shaped mainly by its river and its rail connections into one known for the scenery of its carved sandstone. The panorama captures the rugged gorge as people of that decade would have seen it, a landscape they were learning to present to paying visitors.
