Janesville, Wisconsin, in 1911 was a river city of mills, warehouses, and rail lines along the Rock River in Rock County. Its factories made farm implements, tobacco products, and other goods that moved out by the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul and Chicago & North Western railroads, which tied the town to Chicago and Milwaukee. The Parker Pen Company, founded in Janesville in 1888, was already becoming a well-known local employer, and residents took pride in its growth alongside the older mills. Downtown streets and church spires would have been familiar landmarks to people who lived there, much as the river and the rail yards shaped daily life for the families who worked and shopped under them.
