In 1911, the University of Wisconsin sat on a hilltop campus in Madison, the state capital, with Lake Mendota on one side and Lake Monona nearby. President Charles Van Hise was pressing the idea that the university should serve the whole state, a principle later called the Wisconsin Idea, by sending its faculty into farming, public health, and government work. Madison's economy rested on state government, the university, and the lakefront trade, and the city was also growing as a place where students from small Wisconsin towns came to study. Much of the campus was still being built in brick and stone, and the new state capitol, under construction on the isthmus between the lakes, was reshaping the downtown skyline. The view captures a campus that its students and townspeople already regarded as a source of the state's pride.
